Property Tax Exemptions
Filing for a protest is just one way to lower your tax bill. Texas offers powerful exemptions that can significantly reduce your taxable value. Are you claiming everything you're entitled to?
General Residence Homestead Exemption
The most common exemption. It removes a portion of your home's value from taxation and introduces the Homestead Cap, which limits how much your assessed value can increase each year to a maximum of 10%.
Over 65 Exemption
Available for homeowners aged 65 and older. In addition to a larger exemption amount, this establishes a "tax ceiling" for school district taxes, meaning those specific taxes will never go above the amount assessed in the year you qualified.
Disabled Veteran Exemption
Veterans with a service-connected disability rating are eligible for sliding-scale exemptions. A 100% disabled veteran is completely exempt from property taxes on their residence homestead.
